Manchester United interim manager Darren Fletcher has revealed that he held discussions with legendary former boss Sir Alex Ferguson before agreeing to take on the caretaker role at Old Trafford.
Fletcher, who had been working as the club’s U18 coach, stepped up earlier this week following the dismissal of Ruben Amorim on Monday. With the club entering another transitional phase, the former United midfielder admitted he sought guidance from one of the most influential figures in the club’s history before making his decision.
Speaking on Tuesday, Fletcher explained the importance of consulting Sir Alex, with whom he maintains a close personal and professional relationship.
“I don’t like to make any big decisions without speaking to Sir Alex,” Fletcher said.
“I have a really good relationship with him, and I wanted to talk to him first—ultimately to get his blessing, to be completely honest. I think he deserves that respect.”
Fletcher added that Ferguson’s response reassured him and aligned with his own beliefs about responsibility and service to the club.
“I wanted to run it by him, and he echoed my thoughts. When you’re an employee of the club, your job is to do your very best for Manchester United. That’s something I try to live by every day, so it was comforting to hear him say that.”
The interim boss also confirmed that he has not yet spoken with Ruben Amorim since the Portuguese coach’s departure, though he stressed that the situation is understandable given the circumstances.
“I’ve reached out to him but haven’t managed to make contact yet, which is understandable,” Fletcher said ahead of the Burnley match.
“He’s got a lot on his mind, and I’ve been very busy as well. I had a good relationship with Ruben, and he was great with me.”
Despite the abrupt change, Fletcher emphasized the need to move forward quickly and refocus the squad.
“Football can be a cruel game, so it’s important we move on fast and try to inject some energy and spirit back into the group. Hopefully, we’ll see more of that tomorrow.”
Fletcher will take charge of his first match as caretaker manager when Manchester United face Burnley, as he looks to guide the club through a crucial period with renewed focus and unity.
