Former Manchester United and Bayer Leverkusen manager Erik ten Hag has secured a new role in football, with FC Twente confirming his appointment as the club’s new technical director.
The 55-year-old has been out of the managerial spotlight since being dismissed by Manchester United in October 2024, where he was replaced by Ruben Amorim—who has since also been relieved of his duties. Despite a turbulent end to his time at Old Trafford, Ten Hag appeared to quickly find a route back into top-level football.
Shortly after leaving United, the Dutchman was named as the successor to Xabi Alonso at Bayer Leverkusen, a move that initially suggested a fresh opportunity to rebuild his reputation. However, his stint in Germany proved to be short-lived, with the club opting to part ways after just three competitive matches.
FC Twente have now offered Ten Hag a different pathway, appointing him to a strategic role off the pitch. The Eredivisie club confirmed that he will officially begin work as technical director on February 1, placing him in charge of the club’s long-term sporting structure, recruitment strategy, and football philosophy.
The appointment represents a return to familiar surroundings for Ten Hag, who spent a significant portion of his playing career at FC Twente. He featured for the club across three separate spells between 1989 and 2002, developing a deep connection and understanding of its culture and identity.
Ten Hag’s experience at both domestic and European levels is expected to be a major asset as Twente look to strengthen their sporting operations and build a sustainable future. His return has been widely viewed as a move that aligns experience with continuity, offering the club a steady hand in a pivotal role behind the scenes.
