Manchester United Hold Talks With Ole Gunnar Solskjaer Over Caretaker Manager Role

Manchester United have reportedly opened discussions with former striker and head coach Ole Gunnar Solskjaer regarding a potential return to Old Trafford in a caretaker managerial capacity, following the dismissal of Ruben Amorim.

Amorim, 40, was sacked on Monday, January 5, after a turbulent spell that culminated in a controversial post-match press conference following United’s 1–1 Premier League draw with Leeds United. His comments reportedly did not sit well with the club’s hierarchy, accelerating the decision to part ways.

In the immediate term, former United midfielder and academy coach Darren Fletcher has been placed in temporary charge and will lead the team for Wednesday’s league encounter against Burnley. However, Fletcher is not expected to oversee the remainder of the season, with the club actively exploring alternative short-term options.

According to respected transfer journalist Fabrizio Romano, Solskjaer has emerged as a leading candidate for the caretaker role. The Norwegian is said to be open to returning regardless of the length of the contract and has already entered preliminary talks with the club.

The 52-year-old previously followed a similar route back in 2018, when he was appointed as interim manager after José Mourinho’s dismissal. That spell proved successful, as Solskjaer went on to secure the position on a permanent basis after overseeing a strong run of results and restoring morale within the squad.

Solskjaer remains a popular figure among sections of the fanbase due to his deep understanding of the club’s culture and his history as a player, most famously scoring the winning goal in the 1999 Champions League final. His potential return is seen by some as a stabilizing move during another period of transition at Old Trafford.

With United facing a congested fixture list and mounting pressure both domestically and in cup competitions, the club are keen to install an experienced and familiar figure capable of providing short-term stability while long-term plans are finalized.

Further developments are expected in the coming days as Manchester United continue talks and assess their options for the remainder of the season.
