Tottenham Hotspur have paid heartfelt tribute to club legend Martin Chivers following his death at the age of 80, describing the former striker as one of the greatest players in the club’s history.
Chivers remains one of Tottenham’s most prolific goalscorers, having netted 174 goals in 367 appearances for the North London side. His tally places him comfortably among the top five scorers of all time at the club, underlining his lasting impact during a golden era for Spurs.
The former England international joined Tottenham from Southampton in 1968 for a then British-record transfer fee of £125,000. Over the course of an outstanding eight-year spell, Chivers more than justified that investment, becoming a central figure in the club’s domestic and European success.
A powerful and athletic forward with a devastating eye for goal, Chivers played a key role in Tottenham’s trophy-winning years. He helped Spurs lift the UEFA Cup and two League Cup titles, memorably scoring both goals in the 1971 League Cup final victory over Aston Villa at Wembley. He was again decisive on the European stage, finding the net twice in the 1972 UEFA Cup final against Wolves.
On the international stage, Chivers also left his mark, scoring 13 goals in 24 appearances for England despite fierce competition for places during that period.
Tottenham confirmed the sad news in an official statement on Wednesday, paying tribute to a player widely regarded as an all-time great.
“It is with immense sadness that we announce the passing of our legendary former striker Martin Chivers,” the club said.
“We extend our deepest sympathies to Martin’s family, friends, and former teammates at this incredibly sad time.
“Our players will wear black armbands during this evening’s fixture against Bournemouth. Rest in peace, Martin—one of the all-time greats.”
Following his departure from Tottenham in 1976, Chivers continued his playing career with several clubs, including Swiss side Servette, as well as Norwich City and Brighton, before retiring from professional football in 1983.
Martin Chivers will be remembered not only for his goals, strength, and determination, but also for the lasting legacy he leaves at Tottenham Hotspur and in English football.
